Review of Grave Encounters (2011) by Blair F — 17 Sep 2011
This is a fun and scary ride that uses a reality TV show platform to help smooth out the usual vertigo-inducing handheld mania that the "found footage" horror genre is known for and it explains why they are filming everything at every angle.
The faux reality show also gives us some amusing characters (like the douchebag reality host, the over-the-top actor posing as expert for the camera, the chain smoking, under-appreciated ghost tech, the cameraman who bitches that this shit isn't worth the day rate) that help get you involved in the characters more than most horror films these days do, so when they get into dire situations we actually have a connection to them and somewhat care about the outcome.
The movie went further than I thought it would in psychological thrills and has some exciting scares. This is a great one to watch with a group or on a date.
