Review of Grave Encounters (2011) by Jonny B — 25 Jun 2012
With the Paranormal Activity franchise now doing pretty good in my opinion, step forward The Vicious Brothers for a similar take on the 'paranormal' genre...oh dear!
The story basically follows Lance Preston (Sean Rogerson) and his filming crew as they prepare to shoot another episode for their documentary 'Grave Encounter's.' It is clear straight form the early interviews that off the screen they don't believe in paranormal theories and find the matter one big joke which they get paid for if they act serious. However, Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital proves to be a little more challenging for the ghost hunting team.
The premise already sounds cliched with intertextuality shown from films such as Paranormal Activity and the Blair Witch Project. It's only difference is the 'scare factor' is far less effective; honestly even when the film builds up to it it flatters to deceive on so many occasions.
While the scare's are too inconsistent, the characters are very bland and feel like cardboard cut outs while the so called story line doesn't make any sense!
Grave Encounter's was The Vicious Brothers first ever production - a break should be considered!
