Review of Grandma (2015) by Jim H — 31 Oct 2015
What could be an excellent movie given its controversial topic, is soiled with unbridled swearing, no, let's call it cussing, because that's what it is. Random and without purpose. The F bomb repeatedly slips from the mouths of those who shouldn't be. I'm anything but prudish but it disturbed even me. I love Lily Tomlin and everything she does. Her comedic genius needs no props. Her punchlines, no laughter. Here it needed it but didn't get it.
Grandma takes us on a ride many don't want to know about. Here it is. One of life's realities square in your face every minute, every scene. Everyone is pissed off and hating life and they all have reason for it, the least of which is the plot of this film. Estranged from her daughter, dumped by a long time partner, aging and broke, she resolves to help the one person in her life who still has any meaning, her granddaughter. What a roller coaster of a ride we're taken on by these two as they desperately search for the funds, knocking on old doors and dredging up the past, painful as it is. Broken relationships and forced to reconcile with her past, Elle embarks on what becomes the journey of her life.
