Review of Grand Hotel (2008) by Andrew S — 02 Jun 2007
An early example of effective ensemble drama, "Grand Hotel" teeters from melodramatic soap opera---thanks mostly in part to Garbo's eccentric acting style---to witty, sharp suspense thriller.
The editing is choppy at points, and the storyline is traditional classic Hollywood faire, yet the performances by Crawford and Barrymore outshine the film's imperfections. Any Art Deco fanatic will swoon for the 1930s set dressings and costumes.
