Review of Gran Torino (2008) by Laithen K — 02 Sep 2012
Notwithstanding the unfulfilling climax, Gran Torino touches an emotional cord long after the credits roll. Detroiters won't like it because some of us like to imagine our city isn't a violent hole.
But it is, and more than that, it illustrates to largest problem with poverty, which transcends economics, ideology, and race. The biggest problem is avoiding being drug down by some of our our own subcultures, such as gang culture.
The same theme can be seen in movies such as Boyz in the Hood.
