Review of Grace Is Gone (2007) by Gregory N — 09 Jun 2008
While I was hoping for a lot with this one, I feel like the story just doesn't translate well enough to warrant a screen adaptation. There isn't nearly enough emphasis on the main conflict to move the story forward without feeling like we're being skirted around the issue at hand the same way the girls are in the story, only we're in the unfortunate position of knowing the heavy truth and waiting awkwardly and impatiently for it.
What surely works very well as a short novel or possibly even stageplay just doesn't bare enough emotion to keep us as interested as we ought to be. Rather than being either a well-told coming of age story for the young girls, or a heart-rending exploration for their father, we're presented with somewhat of a half attempt at both.
Cusack can do no wrong and plays his role as well as we'd expect, and the young girls are equally as convincing in their roles as well. Ultimately, just not strong enough to work as a successful genre-topper.
