Review of Grace Is Gone (2007) by Jean B — 15 Nov 2010
Really sad but that's with all war movies, a genre I tend to avoid at all costs. Based in the present times, it's typically critical of Bush and the proponents pushing for the war in Iraq... errr, who the heck is on that side anymore? Well it was released last year so maybe it was more relevant then. I thought it was interesting how they focused the story on the kids and how this war affects them more than the political/economical side effects that everyone tends to bring up first. And of course, that's what made this movie really sad.
Lastly, I understood how Nivola's role was supposed to act as the voice of alternate opinion to contrast with the patriotic stance but his incessant questioning in tense, uncertain times felt very disrespectable and rather superfluous. It's not like the news isn't already saturated with nuances of anti-war sentiment so that he was telling them anything new. Especially in a scary time when almost every news is bad news, it just felt wrong of him to try and push his points instead of being there for them and sharing their burden.
