Review of Grace Is Gone (2007) by Tracy — 03 Aug 2008
A short but poignant story about loss and grief. John Cusack, taking a surprisingly mellow and sedate role as awkward widower, pans out perfectly as he attempts to break the news of their mother's death to his two daughters--a relationship which, though never overtly stated, remains estranged to some subtle degree.
While the movie can be seen as slow for some, there is a degree of honesty and truth in Cusack's slouching, internalizing protagonist that really brings the story to life. The film is also great in the way in manages to side-step politics and merely addresses the situation for what it is: a family trying to heal from a loss so overwhelming that, sometimes, words cannot express.
