Review of Grabbers (2012) by Mic R — 19 Jan 2013
This hugely likeable comedy-horror sees sozzled cop Richard Coyle and temping, tee-total mainlander Ruth Bradley battling aliens on a tiny Irish fishing island.
The twist here? You know how in M. Night Shayamalan's Signs the aliens that invade Earth are killed by water? Grabbers' squid-like ETs are allergic to alcohol, so the hero's big plan to survive the night is, in true Shaun of the Dead style, to have a lock in at the local pub.
It's similar to small-town invasion flicks like Gremlins, Tremors or Slither except here, the townfolk are fighting for their lives while they're pissed out of their heads. Charming and funny, Grabbers also boasts the single best and funniest Aliens reference you're ever likely to see.
