Review of Gozu (2003) by Wesley B — 14 Mar 2008
Not really bad, just not really original in the scheme of Miike films. I still enjoyed it for being insane, but it doesn't really come to a head like Audition or Visitor Q. People keep comparing this movie to Lynch and I don't get it.
Yes, lots of weird dream-like things happen, except that Lynch typically has a very strong idea of where it's going and I couldn't tell that Miike did with this one. I will say that watching Miike play around without a clear idea is still more interesting than watching a lot of supposedly talented directors make the same cliche thing over and over.
