Review of Gozu (2003) by Peter F — 01 Jul 2010
Another example of Takeashi Miike's highly unique style of combining surrealism with exploitation. Like most of his films, Gozu has a humorous overtone while at the same time being bizarre and graphic (the opening scene which involves a man beating a little dog to a bloody pulp says a lot).
Gozu certainly isn't for everyone and ranks somewhere among the top-25 weirdest films I've ever seen, but Miike fans will be fully satisfied and then some by this stream-of-consciousness yakuza movie.
