Review of Gozu (2003) by Christian T — 30 Mar 2008
What. The. Fuck? This is weird. Weird. Weird. Weird. Weird. Why do I like it so much? I don't know but it reminds of Lynch/Cronenberg movie with is right up my alley. I am now convinced that Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition, Visitor Q) is probably the strangest filmmaker out there right now and I have absolutely no complaints.
Starting out sorta 'normally' (although the constant pounding of a small puppy onto a concrete sidewalk and a glass window is a far stretch from normal) the film begins with two Yakuza brothers. One of them is starting to slip mentally so the family orders his brother to take him to a yakuza 'dumping ground' and kill him. On the way, however things get complicated when the man that's is supposed to be killed suddenly and inexplicably disapears. What follows is an intense mindfuck of a trip into a surreal nightmare that includes half goat, half human creatures and a woman who loves lactating milk from her breasts.
Deffinitely not a movie for everyone and absolutely not a movie ANYONE will fully understand but it is very well made (considering the low budget) and strangely hypnotic piece of filmmaking.
