Review of Gosford Park (2001) by Lane W — 22 Apr 2009
One can not go wrong with this movie. The DVD special features discuss how Altman directed the actors, especially for the ensemble dinner scenes. Maggie Smith improvised some lines that are perfect for her character.
This is a film I expect to watch many times, with subtitles on to catch all the whispered mutterings and behind-the-scenes dramas. Class issues abound and add a quiet conflict. Add on a murder mystery, secrets, and period costumes - masterpiece.
