Review of Goosebumps (2015) by Stephen G — 27 Feb 2016
Disappointing. The main problem is that the role of the hero is split between two different characters: Zach Cooper and R.L. Stine.
Zach is nominally the hero and he has to come to terms with the death of his father. This is set up at the beginning but is never resolved. R.L Stine has to reconnect with the world and to learn that he can't deal with problems by (literally) running away. He does do this but we don't see his journey. He's a misanthropist, then he isn't. Plus the fact that he's not the main character and movies are supposed to be about the journey of the hero (at least these kinds of movies are). Don't even get me started about the love interest...
