Review of Goon (2012) by Marcus W — 27 Aug 2012
Liev Schrieber and Sean William Scott are the men who actually bring this otherwise direct to dvd release to life celebrating an unheralded or at least an area of hockey thats has both its celebrators and detractors, that of hockey enforcers.
The performances of the leads make you really root for these guys who otherwise outside of the sport wouldn't amount for much, and you really get the sense of rooting for underdog guys. Take that element out of the equation and the film itself is your just slightly below standard sports film that hits all the basic marks and tips its hat ever so slightly to one or two other favs of the filmmakers/writers (Raging Bull comes to mind with all of the fighting and operatic musical cues).
Better then it ought to be and a couple of sweet moments.
