Review of Goodnight Mommy (2015) by Alan W — 13 Mar 2016
Twins are inherently freaky (see: The Shining) but who knew the scariest and most twisted ones come from Austria? In spite of some initial narrative improbabilities and an end of film reveal that I guessed correctly within the first 5 minutes, this is a tense and effective psychological thriller that conveys an unpleasant sense of dread throughout to make this one of the most uncomfortable and disturbing viewing I've had for a long time.
By the time the inevitably grim but confident ending arrives, I was equal parts impressed and disgusted. It is a gutsy move to release this film during Mothering Sunday in the UK - you will understand why when you see it.
Just don't bring your mom.
