The first great movie of 2009! I've admired Bahrani's work in the past but this is a perfect combination of dramatic realism combined with his signature naturalistic approach to filming. The screenplay is layered and intelligent allowing the film to be poignant and observant.

I love how the subjects of his films are seemingly simple, lower class people with simple ambitions but who actually lead complex and interesting lives. At the core of this film is a phenomenal performance by Souleymane Sy Savane who totally takes the material and breathes life into it.

It's the most riveting performance I've seen since Michael Shannon last year in "Shotgun Stories" - he elevates the film to a new level. Personally I didn't find the editing very effective and at time Red West wasn't particularly convincing but overall I loved the film.
