Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by Ali B — 16 Oct 2009
Ramin Barani, crowned by Roger Ebert as the new great American film director, has delivered a masterpiece with this picture. The movie is set in the long winding roads, motels, bars of Winstem-Salem (so perfectly rendered you almost feel you are there), and tells the story of two very different men from vastly differing cultural backgrounds, and the way they interact with each other, and influence and come to respect each other's desires and dreams.
The plot is reminiscent, vaguely, of Kiarostami's "Taste of Cherry", but the film is far different. Bahrani is immensely generous with his characters and story, never judging anyone, allowing all a sense of dignity.
He doesn't even have to sidestep any cliches that appear in films of this kind ; they hardly occur to him. This is a wonderful, unforgettable, unmissable film.
