Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by John S — 17 Oct 2009
Good solid Drama.
I liked this film, it was a very interesting take on an original subject and although it didnt live up to its metacritic billing (top 10 of the year) I definately enjoyed watching it and would recommend it to anybody.
Free of pretensions, the director let the actors do the acting and there were some excellent moments in the film, notably the denouement when William and Solo go their seperate ways on the way to the Rock pictured in the poster. The look said it all!
I had to watch this film with subtitles, the accents and the clarity of the sound made it hard to understand them sometimes. I also thought that there were some areas of the film that didnt work such as the sudden breakup of Solo and his wife for no real reason, but this is nitpicking (I always do this) and largely the film was a very good piece of modern drama. Possible Academy award nods could be given to the acting in this film.
