Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by Karl L — 15 Dec 2009
I enjoyed this movie because it relied on its characters to carry it, instead of a heavy melodramatic plot. Souleymane Sy Savane plays a wonderfully likable Solo, a kind young African-American who is optimistic to a fault.
His personality clashes with William, a stubborn old man who wants Solo to use his Taxi in 2 weeks to take him to a cliff where he can commit suicide. This sounds like a deeply depressing premise, but the movie never takes advantage of its plot to elicit emotions like many other dramas would.
Instead we just get to watch how these characters interact with one another and how they change eachother's lives. It's a very simple movie at first glance, but there is definitely an unspoken complexity to its characters that you get glimpses of from time to time.
Very worthwhile watch. I would recommend being well rested when viewing it though, as the movie is in no hurry and can drag at time even with a 90 minute runtime.
