Review of Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) by Mark S — 04 Jan 2009
Before the likes of Dead Poet's Society and Dangerous Minds there was Goodbye, Mr Chips, and I think it's the most inspiring of all the inspirational teacher films that have been made. I'd love to have been taught by someone like Mr Chipping.
Before this I had only previously seen Robert Donat in Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, so I was quite surprised by just how good he is as the kindly old schoolteacher (when in reality he was just 34 years old).
It's testament to how good a performance he gave that he won that year's Best Actor Oscar over Clark Gable in Gone with the Wind, Laurence Olivier in Wuthering Heights and James Stewart in Mr Smith Goes to Washington.
