Review of Good Will Hunting (1997) by Plain C — 14 Mar 2015
This really is simply a flawless movie. I'm not saying that everyone has to like it, but for what it's trying to accomplish, Good Will Hunting makes no missteps.
Will has a ton of character. His genius is handled very well. The fact that he's incredibly smart isn't the bulk of his character. It's moreso about how he chooses to use it, if at all, and what the people around him think he should do. A lot of different outlooks on what his intelligence is meant for come about. It's used as an engine to explore what it really means to get the most out of life. I liked seeing his evolution from start to finish, from a smart douche bag to a likable douche bag, and finally to a very complex person I sympathized with entirely.
On a technical side, it's all great. Great screenplay, nice acting, solid pacing, and a plot that wasn't at all predictable. The score was a peculiar choice: all the tracks are very light and have a sense of whimsy, which really only seemed to match up with the movie's tone towards the end. I liked it, though. I enjoyed every aspect of Good Will Hunting.
