Review of Good Time (2017) by Adam M — 06 Sep 2018
Fuck yes. This year has proven to me that the former stars of Twilight are so much better than those movies allowed them to be. Kristen Stewart was brilliant in Personal Shopper earlier this year, and really good in Certain Women as well.
Robert Pattinson was so charming in Lost City of Z, and now he comes and fucking kills it in Good Time. Pattinson is fascinating to watch in this movie. It is such a wildly compelling film, and I mean that somewhat literally.
It feels like the movie is constantly moving forward. Pattinson never stops, constantly trying to overcome each obstacle in his path. There is a massive twist about a third of the way into the movie that is barely addressed.
It happens, and by the time the audience has caught up, the protagonist has already moved past it and come up with a new plan. The synth soundtrack and tight cinematography often make it feel like you're watching a horror movie, like everything could go wrong at any second.
Tyler W. Toppings compared the constant forward momentum of the main character to improv, always pushing ahead, always using what's behind him to solve his future problems. The ending leaves you with fantastically conflicting emotions.
The final shot of Pattinson is gripping and the scene that follows closes the movie on an unexpectedly touching note.
