Review of Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) by Elliott F — 30 Jun 2012
George Clooney makes a stunning directorial impression with Good Night, and Good Luck., a quiet and fascinating film about newsman Edward R. Murrow's battle with Senator Joseph McCarthy and his Communist witch hunt of the early-mid 1950s.
The film is a fairly straightforward handling of the subject matter, but Clooney makes several brilliant decisions: the film is shot in black and white, which adds a level of stark authenticity to it; additionally, he features real newsreel footage of McCarthy and trials as if they were breaking news, which just furthers the feeling of authenticity.
The film is smartly written, well executed, comfortably edited, with gorgeous black and white cinematography and packed with one of the best ensembles of the year 2005, led by David Strathairn in a brilliant performance as Murrow.
