Review of Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022) by Bertobellamy — 30 Jul 2022
'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' is an important film on so many levels. Not only does director Sophie Hyde tries to start a conversation about sexual desire in mature women and their reservations because of the "what would people think?" stigma; sex workers' rights, body positivity, the sadness of letting your parents down, and the guilt we tend to associate with pleasure are all tackled here with a remarkably funny and quite intelligent film.
Katy Brand's solid screenplay, which has the main characters chatting in a hotel room for almost 90 minutes, is elevated by Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack's acting; both are incredibly charming in this.
Do not let the "single location" premise spook you; Hyde creates a very engaging world within these four walls, and the emotions, reactions, and feelings portrayed there are very honest and powerful.
P. S. If you love Alabama Shakes and Brittany Murphy, prepare for an excellent musical moment.
