Review of Good Hair (2009) by Lauren M — 29 Mar 2010
I don't even know what to say about the movie. I mean, it was good and I learned a lot (other than the sodium phylloclade bit - which I learned about from 'Legally Blonde', because contrary to popular belief, white, Latina and Asian women DO get their hair relaxed; though they obviously vary in concentration), but wow. Sure, there are things I've heard before. Like, "in order to work in corporate America, you have to be 'approachable'. I.E. you can't scare them or make them uncomfortable with obviously differences." Like Lander's book says, white people tend to feel insecure about themselves and over-think their potential to be racist if on top of being less qualified, or female, you look not like them. It's sad, but after seeing this, I'm convinced that we're all contributing to them problem.
Oh my god... That hair show was a hot mess.
People really tell their children they don't have beautiful hair? "Natural hair is bad hair." Seriously? No wonder people have this complex about having long or straight hair - especially those who can't really grow their own. It's sad. Like, you're less of person - less of a women - if you wear your hair naturally, or don't have some long, gaudy colored, badly manufactured weave. And that whole section about that little girl and the having "your man" pay for your weave?! People are sick. I'm ashamed for you. I can't....
