Review of Good Hair (2009) by Gonzo D — 11 Mar 2010
I hate to say this, as I am a huge Chris Rock fan- this movie sucked! I'm not sure what this movie was supposed to be (documentary, comedy, funny documentary??) but it failed, no matter what is was aiming for.
This material would have been better suited as a history channel special or something like that, not a feature film. The source material just doesn't hold your interest for very long and Rock provides little in the way of comedy to help us get through the rest, perhaps this was done on purpose in order to not make too much light of the message (totally understandable).
And what is that message?? That some african americans feel the need to try to make their hair look "white" in order to be considered beautiful (spike lee covered that in the early parts of his movie "X" in the early 90's) or the importance african americans place on hair and/or hairstyle? Again, nothing groundbreaking here.
At first, I thought the focus on the hair competition would keep me interested, but by the end of this movie I found that I didn't really care who won- as the film makers did not spend enough time on the participants to make me care about any of them or their stories.
