Review of Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (2008) by Elliot G — 21 Jul 2008
A solid documentary, one of the best biographical I've seen. It gets a little stupid at times, like the recreations of Thompson on the road or sitting at his typewriter, but you can't deny the man lived an interesting life.
Still, is there nothing to be said about the fact he destroyed a political career and generally denigrated the American political system with his dishonest reporting? It's fun to look at and experience, but I wouldn't take his life as a model to live by.
He killed himself, in the end, and I don't mean the gunshot: the alcohol, the drugs, the women, in the end he couldn't write. Is that good? Romantic, I suppose.
