Review of Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (2008) by Greg L — 10 Aug 2008
Gonzo is about one of the greatest American journalists in the last 100 years.
Thompson was known for inserting himself within the story, and thus oddly making himself the centerpiece of whatever topic he's trying to report.
The documentary is a must see for those who have only 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' to go on when it comes to knowing who Hunter S. Thompson is.
If you know the political exploits of Thompson, or have followed his works over time, I would say skip this film. It's too generic, and really glosses over the nitty gritty of what made Hunter S. Thompson tick. Also, seems to capitalize on Johnny Depp's appearances, which is a bit annoying.
I like that Depp narrates a good chunk of the documentary, I hate that Depp is shown narrating a good chunk of the documentary.
The one thing the documentary does cover very well, is the parallels between the time Hunter covered back in the '70s and now. it's a shame he decided to leave because humanity needs a figure like Thompson to upset the established order.
