Review of Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (2008) by Russell C — 06 Dec 2008
I was expecting a straight-forward documentary about the man, but I got much more. This documentary successfully mixes interviews with people who knew him best (his editor, his ex-wives and children, Jimmy Buffett, Ralph Steadman, among others) with a lot of archival footage of the man himself.
There's also smatterings of bits from movies based on his work, original re-enactments of his audio recordings, as well as a few moments of Johnny Depp reading excerpts of HST's work (a highlight).
If you're a fan of HST, there's not a whole lot in this doc that you probably didn't know already, but it's still absolutely worth watching if you're even remotely interested in one of the most original counter-culture voices of the 20th century.
