Review of Gone with the Wind (1939) by Nate J — 24 Aug 2011
It took me two sittings to get through this near four hour epic. Luckily tge film is split into two parts with an intermission about halfway.
Part one is really slow going and you have to really persevere to get through it. Everything is there, the acting and film work are excellent, it just seems to take longer than needed to get where its going.
Part two however was actually quite enjoyable. It is fucking depressing, and there's still over two hours in this part alone, but the story is now in place and it's time to move on to the importance behind it.
I was told to watch out for Rhett, as he was a nasty bastard. Clark Gable plays him so damn well, he's cocky as hell and knows what he wants, and I don't know if I'm the only one, but I came away from the movie feeling sorry for him and thinking Scarlett (played by the starlet Vivien Leigh) kind of had the ending coming really.
A part of the story played a little close to home for me, but it was under different circumstances so I worked through it. I'm glad to see a film from this generation that doesn't heavily rely on 'black' hate. I know, obviously, it was a big problem then (still is) but this film doesn't exploit that in the way I thought it would.
Overall, I enjoyed the second half, the first was boring. Bare with it, you'll enjoy it in the end.
