Review of Gone with the Wind (1939) by Steve G — 15 Mar 2015
Are you kidding? I nominate a 10-star exception. The film of films. The epic of epics. Only The Ten Commandments comes close. The scene with the reading of David Copperfield is possibly the most suspenseful of all time.
Brief anecdote- I actually really disliked this movie after my first viewing. I was expecting the greatest love story ever told, not some war movie with a questionable ending. I thought, "ok, so when does the amazing love begin?" I was hoping they were saving it for the end. Needless to say, it was not quite.
This taught me never again to bring expectations to a movie & to rather view it with a clean slate. The second time I watched it was the single most captivating cinematic experience of my life, bar none. After the 4 hours were over, all I could do was simply sigh... and wish that I could ever experience something cinematically like that again.
I love Ebert's line:
"If you loved 'Scarlett,' you'll love its prequel!".
