Review of Gone with the Wind (1939) by Parker S — 24 Jul 2012
I don't think it deserves all the acclaim it gets. First of all, even if its as grand and magnificently shot as this movie, no film should ever be close to 4 hours. Gone with the Wind is simply way too long and the emotional impact that you experience in the beginning slowly diminishes as the time exceeds that of several movies.
The second problem I have with the movie is that the characters actions are excessive and exaggerated, which again wouldn't be a problem with a normal lengthed film, but when their over zealousness goes on for how long it is, it simply starts to become irritating.
I don't mean to say the acting wasn't good, and I mean quite the opposite, but sometimes enough is enough and I unfortunately got slightly irritated about halfway through it. But enough with the shortcomings, Gone with the Wind is generally a success otherwise.
The dresses and settings are magnificent and beautiful, perhaps some of the most intricate designs I have ever seen, not just in a movie, but ever. The story is lively and dense. And the music that accompanies the film is great as well.
So even though a movie is critically acclaimed, drooled over and generally loved by everyone, I can't say I totally agree. I liked it, didn't love it and I think most people would agree that it has some glaring problems.
