Review of Gone Girl (2014) by Jason R — 04 Feb 2016
Dark and devious, a smartly constructed thriller that takes a decidedly bizzare turn an hour in. Though it starts off with a great deal of traditional mystery format to it, the overlay of Amy's diary, and the revelations therein, particularly as early as they come, bends the entire thing in a way that creates copious drama and changes the entire perception of both main characters.
When Nick begins to put the pieces together about what happened, the tension builds greatly and it starts to become a question of whether or not the truth is possible. Fincher slow-plays this all tremendously, shaping the narrative and the incredible nature of the scheme through stylish visuals and sharp dialogue.
Nothing is ever what it seems in a film such as this, and the conclusion will leave your head spinning, wondering how, after all the events, it could possibly end that way. And it was brilliant.
