Review of Gone Girl (2014) by Matthew D — 13 Jun 2015

On their 5th anniversary, Nick Dunne returns home to discover his wife has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Days go by and clues start to point to foul play by Nick, but who really knows? I'm not sure if it was just me, but having not read the book I was clueless as to the fate of Amazing Amy, constantly being pointed in different directions by the film. Blown around like a whirlwind on what could have possibly happened, who could have done it? The film has a slightly extended run time of 145 minutes but for the most part I was so intrigued by what was going to happen - the time flies by, especially after the introduction of the plot has passed and you are stuck in the depths of the mystery.

The depiction of the media was great in how it provides a bias opinion while harassing the victims of the situation. It is also really interesting to see how the plot adopts the media into becoming a key player affecting future events of the film. Most of the people in the film do pretty good jobs, even Tyler Perry, but the most outstanding was Rosamund Pike. She's of little fame besides small roles in films such as The World's End (2013), Die Another Day (2004) and Jack Reacher (2012), but Pike has finally been able to show what she can do in her role as Ben Affleck's wife, Amy Elliott Dunne. She really took the part and made it her own, so good in fact that I would nominate her for an Oscar.

I can't see myself watching film over and over again, however the rare times I will see it again, it will be an excellent two and a half hours in which I will be lost in the mystery. The best word to describe the film is insane. I definitely recommend seeing the film as soon as possible as it is one of the best films of the year so far. Gone Girl is a brilliant mystery that will keep you enthralled even after you find out what happened.
