Kudos to Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike for terrific performances in this controlled adaptation of a pretty schlocky but cleverly-written Whodunit novel.

He's perfect as the poor-boy-made-good-and-married-the-Cool-Girl, resentful and lazy now they've fallen on only slightly harder times. He seems like Everyman, but actually we could just as easily hate him as love him.

She is amazing as the Cool Girl, Amy, Alpha Female, resentful of her parents, the world and especially her husband.

She disappears. He fast becomes the suspect. His world is full of half-truths and deceptions. And then the audience gets a look in on what's really going on, while he's left in the dark.

David Fincher is always in control of the material, even when it threatens to veer off the rails. He skirts over a few possible plot holes and delivers a dark depiction of marriage, the media and the holes in The Modern American Dream.
