Review of Gomorrah (2008) by John M — 14 Jan 2010
Oversold as a gangster epic, it actually undermines all the glamor attached to the genre by giving an almost documentary dryness to a half dozen stories. The pacing, lack of score, and lack of foley effects make this feel very fly-on-the-wall while the widescreen cinematography reminds you that this is artfully constructed.
These are the foot soldiers caught in a war between the Neapolitan mafia and a secessionist group, and they are trapped in a gritty world of hideous 60's/70's concrete architecture. Violence is occasional and brutal with none of the glamorous choreography we've come to expect.
