Review of Goldfinger (1964) by Thomas D — 12 Aug 2011
--=[007 BOND WEEK 3: Connery]=--.
GOLDFINGER (1964).
There are so many classic scenes and pieces to Goldfinger that it is undoubtedly one of the most recognized, spoofed and loved movies in all of the Bond franchise. The iconic characters such as Oddjob, Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore, Gert Frobe as the greedy, evil Auric Goldfinger. And a solid, confident, and sometimes comical Sean Connery as Bond. Theres just so much within one movie! Who can forget the timeless scenes of the woman painted in gold, the laser table scene, and the epic fight between Bond and Oddjob in the vault of Fort Knox! I guess the crew just decided to throw all of the Q-gadgets into the Aston Martin DB5 in this movie. It's equipped with everything from smoke screen disruptors, to machine guns and missiles, and even retractable tire shredders! Goldfingers plot to break into Fort Knox is a bit ridiculous, but it's expected in a Bond film and actually makes for a pretty interesting break-in. Pussy Galore's flying circus was also a bit overboard and hokey, but all of the other cool stuff balances it out to be an almost perfect 60's era action film! Even though Terence Young sat it out for directing Goldfinger, fill in director Guy Hamilton totally delivers and manages to still incorporate all of the imporant values of the Bond films and even add a little bit extra. Hamilton actually went on to direct three more Bond films including 'Diamonds are Forever' which reunited him with Sean Connery once again. One thing I found confusing about the film is whether or not Goldfinger is affliiated with the terrorist organization known as SPECTRE like the previous two villians in the last two films. Either way he made for a very cool, very enjoyable Bond villian on screen.
Overall: Goldfinger has just about everything a Bond fan could ask for in one movie. It is not only one of the most classic and loved of the series, but also one of the most iconic and memorable movies of cinema.
