Review of Goldfinger (1964) by Wesley D — 30 Mar 2013
To call Goldfinger the ultimate Bond film would be an understatement. This is a major turning point in the Bond series in that the tone shifted from that of a cold war thriller, to that of a gadget laden and extravagant action adventure.
Goldfinger himself is a great villain with the ultimate obligatory henchman, Oddjob. The film is well paced and has great action set pieces. Bond is still using mostly his wits here, but Q-branch has supplied him with his most extensive range of gadgets yet, along with one of cinema's greatest vehicles.
Unfortunately, nearly all the work is done for Bond here. Fortunately, it's still very exciting nonetheless. All the great quips and one liners come into play here as well. There are three excellent Bond girls in Jill Masterson, Tilly Masterson, and the name that became the butt of every Bond girl joke, Pussy Galore.
With Goldfinger, all the right elements that make up what we know of as a Bond film come into play, and they've never worked better.
