Review of Goldfinger (1964) by Scott A — 10 Apr 2013
This is talked about as the best Bond film, but I thought it lacked a lot. It had all the makings to be a great film, but left too much on the table and just left me thinking what could have been.
Yes, Connery is solid here, but the story also starts to get a bit cheesy from the previous two. Cars exploding before the even crash for example. When Bond seduces a girl, they literally role around in hay. Yuck yuck.
But I felt the bad guy was more a mastermind than really evil. Odd Job was fun, but seemed to not do much in the mid section there.
The woman were a huge problem too. They were all gorgeous for sure, but their development was awful. The sisters are both in and out of the film before you can even blink, and Pussy Galore is basically a hired female thug, but we never really understand her motivations in the end.
The final plane stuff was pretty awful too...when the plane is flying you can see the wires for one. Awful.
Theme song is great. A five star movie was there, they just needed to polish a few things up.
