Considered by most to be an indespensible entry into the James Bond series, "Goldfinger" doesn't hold up when viewed as a film on its own merit. Though arguably a film should be viewed for its strengths and weaknesses against other films of its time, "Goldfinger" nonetheless does feel absolutely dated to early 1960s. There appears to have been no attempt by the filmmakers to make a movie that will stand the test of time and the only reason it has is because of the success of the franchise, which does reinvent itself to go along with the times. "Goldfinger" is mostly hokey, sexist, and cliched -- and not in good or endearing ways.

The film was influential, however, and you will find plenty of characters and plot elements that became standards for spy, action, and spoof films to follow, hence the high regard so many have for it. But the truth of the matter is that you will not find much in "Goldfinger" that is exciting, well-done, or interesting. Instead you will find plenty to make you shake your head and cringe.
