Review of Golden Door (2006) by Tanya H — 28 Mar 2008
An interesting film with a lot of worthwhile things to say. A Sicilian family immigrates to America, and we witness the beginnings of a connection between the widowed father and an English woman on the boat - played by the Charlotte Gainsbourg, who gave a strong performance as usual.
Everyone in this film, really, leaves a mark on you in their own way. The film is largely about the hopes and dreams of these immigrants - represented by interesting and well done dream sequences of sorts, showing their fantastic vision of America.
We don't really get any plot resolution beyond Ellis Island, but there is some strong commentary on the American immigration process and its dehumanization at the time. Of course, at a time like this, it can only encourage you to think on how we look at immigration today - and treating immigrants and people from other countries like they're less human than we are is certainly a common theme today.
The times, how they do not change, sadly.
