This beautifully shot movie tells the story of a rural Sicilian family and its decision to move to America at the beginning of the 20th century. They embark a packed ship and set sail for the New World where they will need to pass several tests to be allowed in.
During the journey they meet a mysterious English woman (played by the now ubiquitous Charlotte Gainsbourg). This particular situation sets the movie in motion after a relatively slumbering start.
