Review of Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film (2006) by Adam P — 29 Feb 2008
Not always the best in terms of editing and clarification, but the interview footage is strong and it covers a lot of ground. Unfortunately certain crucial bits (the Italian influence, 'Black Christmas', etc.
) get all but passed over with a few stock photos, even though they're essential. It leads us up through today, though I'd argue the term "slasher" becomes suspect, even contradicting the descriptor the documentary gives, when films like 'Hostel' and 'House of 1000 Corpses' come into play.
All in all, if you know the genre at all it's pretty much information you already have, but it's very entertaining, sometimes intellectual, and has the added bonus of basically being a "best of" death montage by the end of it all.
