Review of Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla (2002) by Rex M — 02 Feb 2009
Godzilla is wrecking Japan again. Goverment decides to build the ultimate weapon to battle Godzilla: Mechagodzilla, called Kiryu, build aroud original Godzillas bones. Monster action ensues.
I guess this was ok. It was little thin on characters, and eventough humans have never been the main part of these movies, still there has been many strong characters through the years. Like in previous Mechagodzilla movie.
And Godzilla feel little shallow too. Yes, he destroyes cities, but that's about it. He doesn't seem to have any other purpose. Like in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah he had so much depth. But still, he looks cool.
There was positive things too, of course. Score by Michiru Ohshima was amazing, and the Godzilla's Theme, playing over the opening battle is just mindblowing. And that particular scene is the best scene in whole movie. Intense!
Also, special effects are top notch, and Mechagodzilla is badass! That shot of it/him at the sunset, power shutting down... Wow. Nice.
And Yumiko Shaku, as Kiryu pilot Akane, is cute. Thin character, but A+ for looks.
