Review of Godzilla (2014) by Basilthebatlord — 17 May 2014
Despite it's title, this film is not about Godzilla. The focus of the film highly lies with the other two antagonist monsters and with the awfully cliched military-man protagonist. Godzilla has absolutely no depth whatsoever to his character and exists purely to serve the role of absolute and total savior.
He submerges for the first time in 60 years just to kick the bad guys butts and then immediately leaves as soon as the job was over as if he was just waiting to be a good guy. Some criticize this film for lacking action but I actually found that to be a great relief in the days where every blockbuster movie must spend 45 minutes of the film blowing things up for no reason.
To discuss the positive aspects of the film, the CGI monsters really do look fantastic and some scenes of the fight sequences were genuinely very cool but what drags this movie down is how Godzilla is almost a supporting character whose only role is to save the day when needed.
This film should have just concentrated on one kaiju, that being Godzilla. Other monsters should have waited for inevitable cash-in sequels.
