Review of Godzilla (2014) by Andrew B — 11 Feb 2015
Okay, first things first, this film is way better than the 1998 Godzilla. Secondly, Gareth Edwards has created a visually stunning film with some okay (and some horrible) acting and an okay plot. The major problem with this film is that they have diminished the king of monsters to a supporting role, not letting him reign supreme above all the destruction.
While the intention is well founded this film suffer from the issue of being too serious. In other words it tries so hard to be gritty and realistic it leaves little room for fun. The first 3rd and last third of the movie is great but the mid portion is a disappointment.
Godzilla 1985 is my favorite Godzilla movie and it will stay firmly at the top of that list but this is a smarter than the average summer blockbusters and even better than some of the other Godzilla films, and that counts for something.
