Review of Godzilla (2014) by Ben H — 07 Mar 2015
Gawd-Awful.
After the 1998 version, did the world need another Godzilla? Before the 1998 version, did the world need one? The answer is no.
This cheap looking, dark (so you can't see the CGI join) version has been praised for not showing the monster till 40 minutes in. Rather than build tension, the film has such a messy convoluted plot and is so deadly serious, that it almost grinds to a halt before it gets going.
The Brit director is a disciple of Ridley Scott, uses darkness, dry ice and quick cuts and poor Brit actors doing crap American accents (again!). It is worse than the 1959 Japanese film and the 1998 film in every respect.
Godzilla is in competition with a male and female other monster (they only come in 3s) for radioactivity or some such nonsense. It is full of crap, deus ex machina, and terrible acting, I would have walked out of the movie.
No fun, just suffering.
