Review of Godzilla (2014) by Winston B — 05 Mar 2017
I just watched this movie for the second time last night in preparation for the release of Kong: Skull Island next week. I watched it originally a couple years ago and I remember liking it. But when I watched it last night, I was honestly blown away.
While Godzilla is barely in the movie, it doesn't take away from the fact that this movie is incredible fun. The music, direction, and cinematography make the movie so much more fun than it should have been.
Similarly to Rogue One, which was also directed by Gareth Edwards, Godzilla has this way of adding atmosphere and suspense to mostly pointless scenes. For example, in Rogue One, the scene on the rainy planet is made very entertaining despite the fact that it should be one of the most boring parts of the movie.
A counterpoint to this scene in Godzilla is when the military is driving to a secret bunker in Nevada. This scene is a small moment, but it just really gets me in the groove for some reason. The movie does focus on human characters that aren't the most interesting people, but they don't stop it from being straight up awesome.
I definitely plan to watch Godzilla again and I'm now even more excited to see Kong.
