As a fan whose seen all 28 of the original Japanese films, I can overlook the bland acting apart from a few actors and the messy storyline. It's on par with some of the best of the Japanese films. The destruction scenes here are spectacular.
But Edwards keeps cutting away from the monsters as soon as we see them. I can't wait for the inevitable sequel, but this a nice and faithful reboot that does what it needs to. There's definitely room for improvement.
But this is up there with some of the best of the franchise.
